What is elopement?
Elopement is an intimate and personal way to celebrate your love and commitment to each other. Unlike traditional weddings, elopements are often private ceremonies with a small number of guests or just the couple themselves. It allows you to have a more relaxed and spontaneous experience, focusing solely on your love and connection. Elopements can take place anywhere, from picturesque destinations to meaningful locations close to your heart. It's a chance to create a unique and unforgettable wedding experience that truly reflects your personalities.
Eloping is becoming increasingly popular among couples who want to break away from the traditional wedding norms and create a day that is truly their own. It offers the freedom to customize every aspect of your celebration, from the location and decor to the vows and attire. With an elopement, you have the flexibility to design a day that is authentic and meaningful to you, without the pressure of conforming to societal expectations.
Benefits of eloping
There are several benefits to eloping that make it an attractive option for many couples. Firstly, eloping allows you to escape the stress and financial burden that often comes with planning a large wedding. Instead of worrying about pleasing a large number of guests, you can focus solely on your own happiness and create an experience that is intimate and meaningful.
Another advantage of eloping is the flexibility it offers in choosing your wedding location. Whether you've always dreamed of saying your vows on a secluded beach, in a rustic barn, or on top of a mountain, elopements give you the freedom to choose a destination that resonates with you as a couple. You can select a location that holds special meaning to your relationship or simply a place that captures your hearts.
Additionally, eloping allows you to have a more relaxed and intimate ceremony. With fewer guests, you can truly be in the moment and savor the emotions of the day. You can have a ceremony that is personal and focused on your love and commitment to each other, without any distractions. It's a chance to create memories that will last a lifetime.
Elopement Checklist: Before the elopement
Before embarking on your elopement adventure, there are several important tasks you need to complete. This section of the checklist covers everything you need to do leading up to your elopement day.
Decide on a budget: Determine how much you're willing to spend on your elopement and allocate funds accordingly. Consider expenses such as travel, accommodation, ceremony fees, attire, photography, and any additional services you may require.
Choose a date: Select a date that works for both you and your partner. Consider factors such as weather, availability of your preferred location, and any personal significance the date may hold.
Hire an Elopement Photographer: Having someone who specializes in telling the whole story of your elopement matters. Choosing to have an “untraditional” wedding means you should definitely invest in having someone who specializes in elopements. Because an elopement photographer is simply so much more than someone just showing up and photographing your wedding. An elopement photographer believes in your why and honors everything you put into your elopement. You deserve to have someone who cares just as much about the day you get married as the two of you do.
Pro tip: Book an engagement session! You will feel so good meeting your photographer ahead of time and getting to know them.
Research and choose a destination: Take the time to research different elopement destinations and choose one that resonates with you as a couple. Consider factors such as travel requirements, local laws and regulations, and the overall vibe of the location.
Obtain necessary documents: Check the legal requirements for getting married in your chosen destination and ensure you have all the necessary documents. This may include passports, birth certificates, divorce or death certificates (if applicable), and any other paperwork required by the local authorities.
Passports: If you're flying anywhere out of the country, you’ll want to make sure these are up to date!
Book travel and accommodation: Once you've decided on a destination, book your travel and accommodation well in advance. Consider factors such as flight availability, accommodation options, and proximity to your ceremony location.
Flights: If you’re flying somewhere, always keep an eye out for flights. Generally, the earlier you book, the less expensive they will be. I always check the Hopper App to see what price predictions look like for a specific location.
Car Rental: How will you get around? Are there day-of arrangements you need to make for your elopement (4x4 vehicle, helicopter ride)?
Research local vendors: If you require any additional services such as a florist, hair and makeup artist, or a wedding planner, research local vendors in your chosen destination. Read reviews, compare prices, and book your preferred vendors as early as possible.
Create a timeline: Having some sort of timeline is essential to the flow of your day. Remember when putting this together to give yourself plenty of transition time and room for spontaneity!
Elopement Attire: Just because you’re having an elopement doesn’t mean you can’t have that dream dress or a custom-fitted suit! You’ll want to make sure you can get these special things in time.
Pro tip: Upgrade your gear! If you’re doing a hiking or adventure elopement, with all that mula you're saving - get yourselves something nice.
Guest List: If you’re having guests attend your elopement wedding, send them an invite! If you are having a destination elopement, you may want to bump this up to right after you choose an exact location so they have plenty of time to make their own arrangements. Pro tip: check out Wide Eye Paper Co for invites, they seriously make the cutest custom invites and announcements!
Officiant: There are a couple of routes you can go here:
- Hire an officiant.
- Have a friend or family member get ordained (my husband and I did this!).
- If you're having a “just us” elopement experience and just need someone to say a few words to make it legal, I do that!
Vendors: What other vendors are you going to want or need for your elopement wedding? While you may choose to DIY some elements of your elopement, these vendors can help make sure things go smoothly:
- Florist
- Videographer
- Caterer/private chef or baker
- Musician or band
- Hairstylist
- Makeup artist
Accessories: Don’t forget the little details like:

Ceremony Accessories: If you’re doing any ceremony rituals like smudging, celebratory champagne or drinks, make sure you get this stuff planned and ready! You might want to stand on a beautiful blanket or rug during your ceremony or have a custom wood altar.
Don’t Forget the Rings: Purchase bands if needed and make sure they’re sized, polished, and ready to go!
Special Extras: If you want to put together a special gift or a surprise for your fiancé, start planning it now! You could write them a song or play one on your elopement day, collect letters from your friends and family to read on your elopement day.
Final Fitting: Don’t forget any final alterations or adjustments that may be needed for your dress or suit!
Confirm Vendor + Guest List: Send your vendors a copy of the timeline, finalize any payments. If you invited anyone to be a part of your elopement day, check in with them! Get an accurate headcount.
Make Arrangements: If you need a pet sitter, someone to watch your house, water your plants, or take care of anything else while you're out there having the time of your life on your elopement day, get them booked!

Elopement Checklist: The Ceremony
The ceremony is the heart and soul of your elopement, and it's important to plan it in a way that is meaningful and reflects your love for each other. Here are some essential tasks to consider for your elopement ceremony:
Choose a ceremony location: Select a location that holds special meaning to you as a couple or simply one that captures your hearts. Whether it's a secluded beach, a lush garden, or a mountaintop, choose a place that resonates with your love story.
Write your vows: Take the time to write personalized vows that express your love and commitment to each other. This is an opportunity to share your hopes, dreams, and promises for the future. Etsy has a ton of really beautiful options for custom vow books too!
Select ceremony decor: Decide on the type of decor you'd like for your ceremony. This could include floral arrangements, an arch, candles, or any other elements that enhance the ambiance of the location.
Choose ceremony music: Select music that is meaningful to you as a couple. Whether it's a live musician, a playlist of your favorite songs, or the sound of nature, music can add a special touch to your ceremony.
Decide on your attire: Choose attire that reflects your personal style and the overall vibe of your elopement. Whether you opt for a traditional wedding gown, a casual dress, or a suit, make sure you feel comfortable and confident in what you're wearing.
Arrange transportation: If your ceremony location is separate from your accommodation, consider arranging transportation for you and your partner. This could be a private car, a horse-drawn carriage, or any other mode of transportation that adds to the experience.
Plan any additional elements: If you'd like to include any additional elements in your ceremony, such as a sand ceremony, a unity candle lighting, or a handfasting ritual, plan and prepare accordingly.
Remember that the ceremony is a reflection of your love and commitment to each other. Customize it to suit your preferences and don't be afraid to think outside the box.
Elopement Checklist: After the Elopement
After your elopement ceremony, there are a few tasks to complete to ensure everything is properly documented and organized. Here's what you need to consider for the post-elopement phase:
Honeymoon:Is your elopement location the same place you’ll be honeymooning? If not, rinse and repeat some of these steps to begin planning your honeymoon!
Obtain a marriage certificate: Depending on the laws of your chosen destination, you may need to obtain a marriage certificate. Research the requirements and process for obtaining a legal marriage certificate and complete the necessary steps.
Notify family and friends: Once you're married, it's time to share the exciting news with your loved ones. Notify family and close friends personally, either through phone calls, video chats, or personalized announcements.
Send thank-you notes: If you received any gifts or well-wishes from family and friends, take the time to send thank-you notes to express your gratitude. This is a thoughtful gesture that shows appreciation for their support and love.
Plan a celebration: Consider planning a celebration to share your joy with family and friends who couldn't be present at your elopement. This could be a casual gathering, a dinner party, or even a reception-style event.
Reflect and celebrate: Take the time to reflect on your elopement experience and celebrate the love and commitment you've made to each other. This could be a simple romantic dinner, a weekend getaway, or any other activity that allows you to reconnect and celebrate your journey together.
Elopement Photography Tips:
Capturing the essence and emotion of your elopement is essential for preserving the memories of your special day. Here are some photography tips to ensure your elopement photos are stunning and meaningful:
1. Choose a skilled elopement photographer: Research and choose a photographer who specializes in elopements and has a style that resonates with you. Look through their portfolio, read reviews, and have a consultation to ensure they understand your vision.
2. Scout locations: Work with your photographer to scout locations for your elopement photos. Consider factors such as lighting, scenery, and accessibility to ensure you capture the beauty of your chosen destination.
3. Plan for golden hour: Golden hour, the hour before sunset or after sunrise, offers the most flattering and magical lighting for outdoor photography. Consult with your photographer to schedule your elopement ceremony and photoshoot during this time for the best results.
4. Be comfortable in front of the camera: Practice posing and being in front of the camera before your elopement day. This will help you feel more relaxed and natural, resulting in more authentic and beautiful photos.
5. Capture candid moments: While posed photos are important, don't forget to capture candid moments that reflect the joy and love of your elopement day. Let your photographer capture the laughter, tears, and intimate moments that make your elopement unique.
6. Get creative: Don't be afraid to get creative with your elopement photos. Experiment with different angles, poses, and props to add a touch of personality and uniqueness to your images.
Remember that your elopement photos are a visual representation of your love story. Work closely with your photographer to ensure they capture the emotions and moments that are most important to you.
Elopement Budgeting and Cost-Saving Tips:
While elopements can be more budget-friendly compared to traditional weddings, it's still important to plan and budget accordingly. Here are some budgeting and cost-saving tips to help you make the most of your elopement:
1. Determine your priorities: Identify the elements that are most important to you and allocate more funds towards those aspects. Whether it's photography, location, or accommodation, prioritize what matters most to you as a couple.
2. Consider weekdays and off-peak seasons: Opting for a weekday elopement or getting married during the off-peak season can often result in significant cost savings. Venues and vendors may offer discounted rates during these times.
3. Explore DIY options: Get creative and consider DIY options for decor, wedding favors, and even your attire. This not only adds a personal touch to your elopement but can also save you money.
4. Opt for local vendors: If you're getting married in a destination away from home, consider hiring local vendors. They may have more affordable rates compared to vendors who need to travel to your location.
5. Keep the guest list small: One of the advantages of eloping is that you can keep the guest list small. By limiting the number of guests, you can save on catering, venue costs, and other expenses associated with accommodating a large group.
Remember to be realistic about your budget and stick to it. It's important to prioritize what is most meaningful to you as a couple and allocate funds accordingly.
