For couples planning an Iceland elopement, it can be a good idea to do the paperwork at home. International marriage laws can be tricky, and to avoid the bureaucratic headaches, you can get legally married before or after you elope. Paperwork isn’t what makes marriage real, so don’t worry! You aren’t married until you say your vows.
But, if you do decide to get legally married in Iceland, here’s what you’ll need.
Marriage Notification - First, you’ll need to fill out a marriage notification form. It needs to be signed by the two of you, along with two “trustworthy persons” who need to be at least 18 years old.
Original Birth Certificates
Certificate of Marital Status - this needs to be issued within 8 weeks of your elopement ceremony. The US, along with some other countries does not offer these certificates, but some states have an alternate option. Check with your local county clerk and with the district of Iceland!
Proof of Divorce, if relevant
Copies of passports, and original passports for the ceremony
You can get married anywhere in Iceland, but you will need a district commissioner office representative to come to your location, so if you plan to get legally married, make arrangements ahead of time!
